THE GIBRALTAR POINT LIGHTHOUSE - This is one of the oldest sites in Toronto. It was
commissioned to be built in 1796 by the planner and
Lieutenant-Governor, John Graves Simcoe. Construction
started in 1806 and was completed to its present form
by 1832. The original keeper lived in a log cabin near
the tower. His name was Paul Rademuller, now a spirit.
In the early hours of Jan. 2, 1815 , Paul was awakened by
a pair of rowdy guards from Fort York. The duo yelled
at Paul to share his ale, but he refused. A chase lead
Paul running up the spiral staircase, where he was
trapped. The guards stalked their prey, knocking Paul
unconscious with a blow to the head. They threw the
lifeless body over the railing. To hide their crime
they dismemberd the body, and buried the parts all
over the area.
The guards were arrested, convicted, and acquitted of
the crime due to lack of evidence. In 1893 some human
bones were found by the new keeper. He felt that they
belonged to Rademuller. His reasoning was that he had
seen and heard Paul's spirit moaning and searching for
his lost limbs. Visitors over the years have witnessed
an apparition climbing the stairs to light the lamp.
THE MACKENZIE HOUSE - Deemed the most haunted place in Canada, the stories
and legends of the old house are timeless. The Historic
home on Bond St. has numerous entities and bears the
name of the feisty Scotsman William Lyon MacKenzie.
He resided in the house for only 2 years until his
death in 1861. His Grandson William Lyon MacKenzie King,
was prime minister of Canada and a Spiritualist. He
was fascinated with the mystery of the afterlife..
The spirit of a women with long hair walks the halls
and rooms on the second and third floors. Not to be
outdone, a short bald man with a wig , has been seen
in a bedroom on the third floor. Other strange events
include cold spots and footsteps, a piano playing on
it's own and strange sounds throughout the house.
The reports started as early as 1956 by caretakers who
left due to the recurring disturbances. In July 1960
Archdeacon John Frank was summoned to perform an
exorcism in the parlour of the house. Since then the
major problems have ceased but minor ones have still
been reported as of 1966.
THE ROYAL ONTARIO MUSEUM - John worked at the ROM for a short while in 1993. He
was always able to roam the museum and gather more
information. He was privileged to work at night when
the only people in the building were security and
a staff of 12 people. He was told by a long time guard
that strange things happened in the Bishop White
Gallery and the East Asiatic Collection. The guard said
" Currelly spends more time here now than when he was
alive. "
The spirit of the ROM is founder and original curator
C. T. Currelly. From 1907 until his retirement in 1946 ,
Currelly would often spend nights at the museum. He
loved working late hours. His spirit has been seen
dressed in a night shirt. Also the spirit of a young girl
named Celeste has been seen sitting in the McLaughlin
Planetarium from 1975 - 1980. She is wearing a white and
her long blonde ringlet mask her sad gloomy face. She
has been seen trying to blend in with school tours, but
at only 8 years old she is much smaller than the group.
The Planetarium was closed in November 1995 and opens
for special events.
THE HOCKEY HALL OF FAME - The Old Bank of Montreal building, was in operation
from 1847 - 1983 on the corner of Younge and Front St,
and was the scene of a suicide in early 1900's. This
is another example of a RESIDUAL HAUNTING . Since
1993 it has been home to the Hockey Hall of Fame.
The new surroundings haven't made the spirit happy.
The spirit is a women named Dorothy. She was a bank
teller at the branch and during her time there she
had an affair with another married employee. She lost
to the mans wife and in a fit of rage, shot herself in
the head on the second floor's ladies washroom. The gun
she used was the banks personal gun.
Since Dorothy's death, numerous sightings as well as
poltergiest activity, have been reported. Lights would
turn on and off, doors would open and close , and the
female staff would refuse to go into the bathroom.
The bank eventually had to build a new ladies room
and the tales of Dorothy have continued.
Security guards at the Hall of Fame still report foot-
steps and sounds on the second floor and displays
being disturbed. The only reason given is that is must
be Dorothy.
