DMORE BELLEVILLE HAUNTS AND SPIRITS - Belleville , On is infested with spirit ! It is a
community that has been around since United
Empire Loyalists settled in 1789. It was then
called Meyer's Creek after John Walden Meyers.
During a visit in 1816 by Lieutenant - Governor
Sir Francis Gore, the settlement was renamed
Belleville in honor of Gore's wife Arabella.
Residents of the home at 245 John St. in 1965,
started to hear and see things . Many of the
family members heard noises but one person had
reported seeing an apparition. This was still not
finished. Feb. 1995 the new owner heard ticking and
rapping sounds around midnight . Occupants also
saw the spirits of a man and two girls on two
different locations and occasions in the house.
A home at 128 Bridge St. East was built in 1875 by
the wealthy and prominent Matilda Corby. If you
are passing by in the early daylight hours, you
may see a lady with a feather duster in the front
window. It is the spirit of the Corby's maid.
A beautiful stone cottage called " The Fahey
House " has a poltergiest that likes to play
pranks. It has been reported that things go
missing , objects move , and electrical appliances
turn on and off. This has been the work of the
spirit of Peter Fahey, an Irish Stone Mason and
the homes original owner.
Another playful poltergiest of a murderer lurks
in the house at 45 South Front Street. In 1998 the
residents saw objects fall as if being pushed by
invisible hands. Objects would vanish and then
reappear days later in a different spot. It is said
the spirit is a sailor who killed someone in 1815.
One of the oldest building in the city, McIntosh -
Ridley House was built in 1817. This is another
case were renovations stir up ghosts. In 1989 the
workers and visitors reported hearing cries. Tools
would go missing and either turn up days later or
not at all. The spirits of the house weren't happy
with the changes to their home.
The home of 1927 Belleville Mayor Eardley Wilmot,
is haunted by his spirit. Wilmot House is a grand
home located at 293 Dundas Street West. Eardley
was the first man in the region to receive his
pilot's license. One day on the tarmac , he was
heading towards his plane. Another pilot started
his own plane and did not see Eardley. The
propeller decapitated Wilmot in a flash.
